New Generation Energy partners with two local nonprofits to fund green projects at houses of worship

New Generation Energy is excited to team up with the Home Energy Efficiency Team (HEET) and Massachusetts Interfaith Power & Light (MIP&L) on an initiative to increase energy efficiency in Massachusetts houses of worship and in the homes of their congregants.

The initiative — called CARES (Congregations Acting to Renew Earth’s Sustainability) — is funded by Boston-based Barr Foundation. It is a two-year endeavor that will  provides assessment services, hands-on training, guidance through utility-provided services, and funding in order to reduce the energy and water bills in 35 houses of worship in Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville.

New Generation Energy will be involved in the fundraising aspect, using its Green Project Listing Site and matching events to help raise money for several of the energy efficiency projects.

Chuck Lewin, Executive Director, says, “CARES is a great program to bring energy efficiency projects to dozens of congregations. We’re pleased to be partnering with HEET and MIP&L on this initiative.”

We’re partnering with Groupon Grassroots for an Earth Day initiative to provide new thermal windows for The Elizabeth Peabody House

We’re partnering with Groupon Grassroots all week to help fund thermal window installations at The Elizabeth Peabody House, a community center in Somerville, Mass.!

The campaign will be available on the Boston Groupon Grassroots page beginning on Monday, April 16 and running through Sunday, April 22. Using Groupon Grassroots’ collective action model, Groupon subscribers can pledge support for the thermal window initiative, with each $620 raised providing one window for the community center. Groupon has pledged an additional $1,000 to the campaign.

Currently, The Elizabeth Peabody House is working with New Generation Energy to become more energy efficient. The Elizabeth Peabody House runs a preschool, after-school enrichment program, and food pantry from the inside of a 111-year-old former sanctuary. The building features beautiful stained glass windows that — while aesthetically pleasing — have cracked or are missing panes, making it a drafty and less-than-wholesome environment. This campaign hopes to raise dollars to install several of these environmentally-friendly double-paned thermal windows. That way, The Elizabeth Peabody House will continue to preserve the aesthetic beauty of the building, increase the comfort of the families it serves, and save the center significant money in energy costs.

“We are excited to employ the collective action model of Groupon Grassroots to raise support for the thermal window installations at the Elizabeth Peabody House,” said Chuck Lewin, director of New Generation Energy. “We look forward to creating new awareness for The Elizabeth Peabody House and New Generation Energy as organizations in Boston to be featured on Groupon Grassroots.”

One hundred percent of the Groupon Grassroots campaign proceeds will be used to provide thermal windows for The Elizabeth Peabody House.

You can learn more about the campaign here and about Groupon Grassroots here.

Keeping Philadelphia warm, one household at a time

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The Energy Coordinating Agency is hard at work upgrading and installing heaters at low-income households in the Philadelphia area. Jim, a 40-year resident of Strawberry Mansion, Penn., is a recent benefactor of  the organization’s efforts.

“My wife is on her back and can’t do anything,” Jim said. “Thank god for my health and this heat or else we wouldn’t be able to survive.”

Previously, Jim relied on oil to keep his house warm, which was very expensive. In the months since ECA installed a high-efficiency furnace in his home, Jim’s heating costs are down more than $75.

“They did a nice job,” he said. ” It’s good heat.”

And the ECA isn’t done yet. In addition to several ongoing project, it’s also raising money on the Green Project Listing Site for six more heaters.
